At a recent networking event, Casey and I made some great connections and met people involved in the industry - home inspectors, insurance agents, house flippers, recent real estate licensees, and people just looking to absorb information.
Once the Nashville Hot chicken was cold, and many went on with their day, I was approached by a gentleman who asked, “Why Black Mountain?” Since Black Mountain has been a part of my life ever since I could crawl, the response was easy. But first, let me give a little more background on Casey and me.
Casey and I relocated to Middle Tennessee from Colorado where we spent lots of time outdoors and enjoying the local music scene. When we weren’t working our day jobs, there was a short list of places we could be found if one was to look. Saturday night? Well, after wrapping up some tile work or some landscaping, it would be safe to say we'd be checking out Red Rocks or the Grizzly Rose - a couple of our favorite local venues, which were both only a stones throw away from our latest Denver investments. If not there, it was likely we were up in the mountains, rehabbing my family cabin, which sits just over 10,000 feet in elevation in Fairplay. If you’re not local to Colorado, you might not know where Fairplay is. However, you’ve likely heard of the small mining town within. Ever see the show South Park? Yup, that’s where the show is based.
If you go visit, you’ll see remains of old mines, locals with their fishing rods, and a couple of old bars and restaurants (The Park Bar is a must, or Java Moose for your caffeine fix). You’re only a quick 35 minute, winding mountain drive away from Breckenridge, a stellar ski resort and a beautiful town. Further down the road, you'll hit world class skiing in Vail or Aspen ("Oooooh, California" - Lloyd Christmas).
When you’re in Fairplay and you look east from Highway 285, you can see Pikes Peak in the distance. When looking to the west, you can spot several 14ers (You can actually summit 4 in the same day if you start early enough). You'll see tufts of black timber clustered in the closest mountain range, but the majority of the area is covered in the aspen groves, which provide the most beautiful fall hikes, often the final destination for many out of towners coming to enjoy the colors. Black Mountain, in contrast, is densely packed with pines, making it uniquely visible in the surrounding hills of the aspen and stone.
Black Mountain was a major part of our lives prior to relocating to Nashville, and interestingly enough, there is a Black Mountain here in Tennessee, where that same gentleman has a cabin of his own. Small world, I’d say...and apparently one with a few black mountains.
Anyway - that brings us back to the question posed earlier… why Black Mountain?
